CONSUME!

I came across this quote today, and I haven't stopped thinking about it.

"Consume so much that it literally spills out of you."

And honestly, I think this is one of the most important things I've had to learn about being a creative.

Sometimes, we become so obsessed with creating that we forget the importance of consuming. We want to write, but we aren't reading, we want to make art, but we aren't allowing ourselves to experience art. We want to have something meaningful to say, but we aren't making room for new thoughts, ideas, perspectives and experiences.

And then we wonder why creating feels like such a struggle.

You see, I don't think creativity is always about finding something within yourself to bring to life. Sometimes, it's about allowing yourself to be exposed to so much that something eventually comes alive within you.

Read books, listen to people, have conversations, watch films, study things that interest you, explore things that don't, pay attention to the little things, be curious, allow yourself to be fascinated by the world around you.

And don't consume just because you want to create something out of everything. Sometimes, let yourself enjoy things without the pressure of turning them into content.

The point is to keep filling your mind, expanding your perspective and giving your imagination something to work with.

Because eventually, all the things you've read, heard, seen, questioned and experienced begin to find expression in your work. Sometimes consciously, sometimes without you even realising it.

And I think that's beautiful.

I don't want to be a writer who is constantly searching for what to write about. I want to be someone who is so deeply interested in life that there's always something to say.

So, consume!

And when you have consumed enough, let it spill.

Dearest reader, what have you been consuming lately? And more importantly, are you giving yourself enough room to be inspired?
