WHAT IS EASY?

I was having a conversation with my coach the other day, and we got talking about the concept of easy and hard.

You see, when you hear the word easy, what comes to mind? Effortless, abi?

But what if easy isn't all that? And what if hard isn't all work? Because what you do with ease isn't always easy, and what you do with difficulty isn't always hard.

What we call easy or hard is often a product of habit and work.

Ease is mostly habit with a little work. Hard is mostly work because the habit hasn't been built yet.

The thing about habit is that it is built over time. So you'll notice that when you ask someone who has gained mastery in an area how they did it, their explanation often sounds surprisingly simple. They give you steps that worked for them, but those same steps may not work the same way for you because you're both standing on different habits. What they do, they now do almost automatically. You, on the other hand, are still building the foundation they already have.

The years of repetition disappear behind the few minutes of performance. The work it took to build the habit becomes invisible, and all we see is the ease.

That's why what looks like a shortcut is often just the reward of a long road nobody watched them walk.

Dearest reader, don't envy another person's ease without respecting the years that produced it. The version of you that moves effortlessly tomorrow is being built by the repetitions you keep showing up for today.

Ease is built. Curated and then lived.
