SHOW UP TO BARGAIN
"Life gives you what you negotiate by showing up every single day." ~ TheOlushola
My coach would often say, "At the upper echelon of life, it's not about what you want or like, but what is right and what is important." Yes, it sounds strict, but it is true. To climb higher, you have to let go of what's comfortable, what you like, and go out of your way to embrace the unconventional.
This shows in how you show up daily, how well you apply yourself. In showing up and giving every day your best shot, you negotiate for what you want life to give you. It's like a bargain. If I show up at the gym every day, I'll stop whining about my body and, over time, get the fitness I desire. So the showing up, the grinding, the consistency, that's the bargain.
I have this woman on WhatsApp whom I greatly admire. She's such a gym girly, and there's even this meme of her showing up to the gym in native wear because if she had gone home to change, she would've broken her consistency streak. Yes, that's commitment.
She recently posted throwback photos of herself before she started going to the gym, and mehn, I couldn't recognize her because damn, the change was massive! But the caption was what stood out to me the most.
She said, and I'll quote, "I didn't like how I looked, so I changed it."
Guy, that line hit.
Dearest reader, did you see how her showing up, even when it wasn't convenient, was her way of negotiating what she wanted from life?
The same principle applies to literally everything else.
Want to become a better writer? Show up, want to build a stronger relationship with God? Show up, want to grow your business? Show up, want to become healthier, wiser, kinder, stronger? Show up.
Life rarely rewards intentions, more often, it rewards consistency.
So step out of what's comfortable and familiar. Put a knife to your appetite for convenience. Be willing to do what is necessary, even when you don't feel like it, if you want a better bargain from life.
And the funny thing is, whether you're conscious of it or not, every day through your actions and inactions, you're negotiating a certain kind of life. You're voting for a future version of yourself.
Hence, be intentional about it.
The life you desire may not come from one grand decision. It may simply be hiding in the ordinary act of showing up again tomorrow.
