IT'S WITHIN YOU

Just because I’m still hooked on How to Get Away with Murder, something from today’s episode really stood out to me.

Let me give you small background.

So, Annelise Keating, our main character, is a brilliant lawyer. She had this huge case to argue at the Supreme Court. It was her first time there, and it meant everything to her. She had prepared and prepared… but just a few minutes before the hearing, she got a call that completely broke her.

Now, this is Annelise we’re talking about. One of the strongest characters I’ve ever seen. There’s almost nothing this woman hasn’t gone through, and still, she survives. So when I say this call broke her, I mean for the first time in four seasons, she actually gave up. It was that bad. I was literally holding my breath.

Anyway, her partner walks in and finds her on the floor, crying. She tells her, “Annelise, whatever you need, just say it. You have less than five minutes to get into that courtroom.”

And she says she needs vodka.

Mind you, she’s a recovering alcoholic. She’s been sober. She’s not supposed to drink.

But surprisingly, she gets it for her and hands it over. Then she says something that hit me hard:

“Annelise, here’s the vodka. Take it if you need to. But whatever you think is inside this drink is already inside of you.”

And that was it.

She thought she needed the vodka to get back into her A game. She thought the confidence, the strength, the fire came from that drink. But the truth is, those things were never in the vodka. They were always in her.

Because she is Annelise Keating.

And guess what? She didn’t take the drink. She walked into that courtroom and absolutely crushed it.

So it was never the vodka. It was always her.

And that made me realize something. We place our identity and abilities on things that are fleeting. External things. Temporary fixes. But your authenticity, your strength, your brilliance… none of it comes from outside of you.

Even the feelings addicts chase are not in the substance. They already exist within them.

You don’t need extra to be extraordinary. You don’t need anything external to show up and kick ass. It’s already in you. You just have to harness it.

I love Annelise Keating. Questionable taste? Maybe. But honestly… I get it.

So sha, just remember, whatever you think you need to kick ass is already inside you.

Are we clear??
