Chapter two of Personal Branding by Kenrick Urhefe explores the foundations of personal branding.


Personal branding begins from within. Before marketing strategies or online presence comes the need for deep self understanding. This inner clarity guides how you present yourself and shapes your entire professional identity.


With self awareness being one of the key foundations of personal branding, the chapter gives a thorough breakdown of what it truly means. It explains the two dimensions of self awareness, which are internal self awareness and external self awareness.


The early pages of the chapter focus on professional identity and what shapes it. I quote from the text: “Understanding and actively shaping your professional identity is crucial for long term career success and personal fulfilment.”


Two things that stood out for me in this chapter were the concept of;


  • Unique Value Proposition 
  • And the importance of a brand story.


Your Unique Value Proposition(UVP) answers three major questions:


  1. What specific problem do you solve?
  2. For whom do you solve these problems?
  3. How do you solve them differently from others?


These three questions are powerful and form a solid foundation for personal branding.


Your brand story is the authentic narrative that communicates not only what you do but why you do it. I find this fascinating because it connects strongly with your Unique Value Proposition.


In conclusion, the major foundations of personal branding include self awareness, personal identity, a clear Unique Value Proposition, a compelling brand story, credibility, authenticity and consistent content creation.


Dearest reader, after going through chapter two and reflecting on the challenging questions it raised, I realised that I do not have a brand yet and previously knew almost nothing about personal branding. This chapter was truly a good read.


I will leave you with this: “Your content is often the first impression others get of you.” What does yours reflect?

TEAM WORK

It can be quite frustrating when a collective effort results in only one person receiving all the praise. Even if my contribution is just 1%, it shouldn’t be overlooked. You never know how these small efforts can make a significant difference. My bubugaga is back from school, and today we did a lot of tidying up. It’s amazing how I suddenly find the energy to work when she's around, despite my usual laziness. After completing so much work, we took a break—we were honestly worn out. Fast forward to the end of the day: everyone applauded her for a job well done, as though it was solely her effort. It felt off because I felt I deserved some recognition too—it was teamwork, after all. So, the point is, you never know how hurtful it can be when someone's effort goes unacknowledged.
