CHRONICLES OF LADY AVA: Rutherford Comment

In secondary school, we were all part of this club called the “Jet Club.” It was for science students, and we usually just went there to show off the new things we had learnt.

So, there was this zonal meeting we attended outside our school one time. I can still vividly remember how we left there feeling so un-smart, the supposed bests of our school. Mehn!

One of the questions that stood out for Ava that day was when a student asked who knew the Rutherford comment on the observation noted.

We were all lost. We had never come across it before, in all our years of studying chemistry. So, when someone answered, quoting a long statement that sounded so dope, we were wowed.

On getting back to our school, Ava swore to learn it. Fast forward to the next day, she put us through the stress of locating the said statement, only for us to realise it wasn’t even a scientific law or anything that grand. It was just someone’s statement explaining experimental results.

This didn’t stop Ava from cramming it sha. It was long! About two full pages.

I still remember the joy with which she quoted it at the next Jet Club meeting.

Now, someone from our friend group felt challenged and wanted to do what Ava did. After all, it took Ava only one week to memorise it so well that she could rap it like a song.

Madam attempted and came the next day to ask Ava, “How did you do it?”

Ava just laughed. “I had to become one with the words,” she replied. She went on to tell us how she kept reciting and rereading it until it sank into her subconscious, to the point that even in her sleep, she could quote it for you.

That’s the power of doing something over and over again — it becomes part of you. So, it becomes more of an expression than an action.

Dearest reader, in the words of Mr. Pojo, when something is more habitual than it is manual, then it becomes easy. Rutherford’s long comment was easy for Ava because she went through it several times. A path you walk repeatedly becomes a part of you, doesn’t it?
