What Does Failure Say About You?
"The true measurement of self-worth is not how a person feels about her positive experience, but rather how she feels about her negative experience." — X
Me.
How do you treat failure? What’s your behavior, or better still, your reaction towards the negative experiences you encounter?
It’s easy to be proud of our wins, to love ourselves a bit more each time we get something right, and then act the complete opposite when things don’t go our way.
For instance, when the result of my first UTME came out, I was so infuriated with my performance that I loathed myself and began to doubt my intelligence. But the year I scored higher and surprised myself, I was suddenly proud and full of self-love. It felt like I could finally see myself as worthy.
But that is unhealthy. It’s a false way of measuring self-worth.
My feelings toward negative experiences say a lot more about my self-worth and self-love than my feelings in moments of success. Life happens. Not every day will come with applause or wins, but how I treat myself through the tough days, that is the real test.
Dearest reader, how do you feel about yourself on the messy days?
That is where your self-worth lies.
Do you, like me, sometimes feel a sense of loathing when things go wrong?
Sit with that feeling. Examine it. It may just be the starting point of a more grounded, healthier self-love.
