"Options are Oppressive"
I read somewhere that true satisfaction and happiness come from committing to one thing, one career, one partner, and so on. However, there are always alternatives that often seem better.
I hate having to pick between so many options, and I genuinely fear that I might just pick the less fantastic one. But when you’re choosing between just two options, as opposed to many, the regret tends to be minimal.
There’s a human tendency to be greedy in the face of options, and that’s what often leads to unhappiness. Take, for example, an ideal jack of all trades, someone juggling several different jobs, unwilling to commit to one or give up any. I’m pretty sure this person would not be happy or satisfied. It would become a hassle to navigate them all at once, and in attempting to do so, he’ll be exhausted. Before he knows it, dissatisfaction creeps in.
But there's beauty in committing to one: There’s something freeing about making a decision and standing by it. It gives room for depth, for mastery, and for peace.
When we limit our choices, we open ourselves up to real growth. It's in the staying that the magic happens, in the consistency, in the showing up again and again for what we’ve chosen.
So maybe options aren't always a blessing. Maybe the real power lies in choosing, and choosing well.
Dearest reader, in a world that screams "more," I hope you learn the quiet strength of "enough." I hope you find peace not in all the things you could be, but in the one thing you choose to be.
