YOUR BEST ATTEMPT...
I was watching an interview online the other day, and before the interview started, the interviewer said, "Listen, there's no wrong or right answers in this room, there's just your best attempt at the truth." That line stuck with me.
We are often on a quest to dictate how far apart right and wrong are. We try so hard to figure out what is right and what is wrong, and in the process, we forget to just be honest. Like it or not, the idea of right and wrong is far removed from anything we can truly define.
This is why I genuinely feel that Chapter 6 of the book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck" was written for me. Encountering this chapter felt like Mark Manson was giving me a personal lesson.
For someone who is defensive and has the tendency to always want to be right, this chapter titled "You're Always Wrong About Everything" hit a nerve.
He said, and I quote, "There's no correct dogma or perfect ideology. There is only what your experience has shown you to be right for you, and even then, that experience is somewhat wrong too."
We often use our experiences as a standpoint to infer theories, rules, or principles on which life is based, or should be based. By "we," I am also referring to myself and the large percentage of people who can relate to this. But we are wrong, really. We are wrong about everything. The idea is not to be right; the idea is to be you.
Our experiences are not law. Yes, they could be true to us, yet invalid to the next person, and that's totally fine.
Dearest reader, reading this chapter made me ask myself one question, and I’d like to ask you as well: what is so taboo about being wrong?
It's beyond being right or wrong. It is about being true and honest with yourself. Do not gatekeep how far you could go by believing in the rightness of your assumptions. You can always be wrong. In fact, you're almost always wrong.
Like a meme I recently came across says, "Above all, do not lie to yourself."
Remember: there’s no wrong or right answer, just your best attempt at it—whatever that is.
