If You Mustn’t Eat It, Don’t Bite It

At an early stage of my life, I lived with an aunt who often repeated a saying: “A meat you do not want to eat, don’t use your teeth to divide it.”

I never really understood this as a child, but as I grew older, it became a principle I’ve tried to live by.

It may sound boring or overly serious, but I don’t condone the idea of doing things “just because”, especially when those things could have serious ripple effects or lasting consequences.

The idea is simple: if something shouldn't be done, don’t toy with it. Flee. In fact, run a marathon in the opposite direction if you must.

We’re human, and one mistake we often make is assuming we're infallible. Ironically, that assumption makes us even more vulnerable.

I once read that the people with the greatest self-control are often those who least interact with temptation.

As Eric Gugua said, “It is the appearance we flee from, not the thing itself.”

Dearest reader, being in close proximity to something you must not do makes it nearly impossible to show restraint.

If there’s one thing I’ve come to realize in the past few days, it's that out of sight truly is out of mind. If only you knew how much harm proximity can cause, you'd stay far away.

So just remember: if you mustn’t do something, don’t come close to it.
