THEORY VERSUS PRACTICAL.
"Healing is often theoretical until we come in contact with the people who hurt us once again." — X
I've always wondered how people know they've truly healed from situations or trauma because triggers can be tricky, you know. One time, I had gone through a whole process to heal from a particular hurt. After boasting about how well I'd healed, I came across something similar to the situation that had traumatized me.
I froze! I was shaken! And in that moment, I realized I had only healed in my head. I had to face the practicality of it all.
There's something I call theoretical knowledge versus practical knowledge. Both are knowledge, but one is more sufficient and reliable.
Yesterday, when I went to cut my hair, a guy was retelling a story about an incident in his shop. He repairs faulty fans and other electrical appliances, and he had a particular customer who wanted to teach him his job simply because he had studied physics.
Though the customer was right in his physics knowledge, it wasn't of much help to him because practical physics wasn’t exactly the same as theoretical physics.
It's like what my coach would call head and heart knowledge. What you know in your head is theoretical—it isn't as fleshed out or real as heart knowledge. Heart knowledge entails truly knowing, coming to conviction, and embodying it.
That's why, when I thought I had healed but then got triggered, I was utterly shaken. I knew then that my healing had only been in my head. It was like a positive confession on my lips, but it wasn’t solid in my heart.
Now, you can't keep running from triggers—you'll never heal that way. I've learned that our healing process is not complete without confrontation. Not the toxic kind, but the kind that provides closure. Reach out to the person who hurt you, have that conversation, gain that closure, and then move on.
Dearest reader, don’t throw shade at the healing process. Learn to heal both theoretically and practically, so you don’t go around bleeding on people who never cut you. Inugo?
Happy Sunday, by the way! ☺️
