THE STATE OF OUR HEART
"You can escape God through morality and religion as much as you can escape God through immorality." — X
It’s funny how we often do things to please God, acting a certain way so He won’t be mad, yet our hearts are not truly right with Him.
But really, this kind of hypocritical behavior isn’t entirely our fault. What we were taught in children’s church about God often makes us see Him as an easily angered Father, one who demands strict moral uprightness and adherence to a set of doctrines, even if we don’t understand them.
I once read that if the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then that person is a piece of shit.
Think about it: if you weren’t bound by a set of rules or expectations, would you still behave the way you do? Would you still do the things you do?
Honestly, the majority of us wouldn’t. And to some extent, I’d be part of that majority. Our relationship with God often feels shallow because we don’t truly understand His nature.
The state of our hearts matters more than the things we do to please God. You can go above and beyond for Him, but if your intentions aren’t pure, you’ll still miss God.
At the end of the day, it’s not about morality or immorality (Las Las, Jesus was friends with a prostitute and even a tax collector). It’s about the state of our hearts. That’s why King Solomon, in Proverbs, advises us to guard our hearts.
God isn’t looking for perfection—you don’t have to be a saint. He just wants a willing heart. When you walk with Him sincerely, you will grow into who He wants you to be. The attempt to do too much to appear morally upright isn’t necessary; just become. Step into sonship, and you’re good to go.
Dearest reader, God is not an angry Father, He is loving. So there’s no need to put on a show to please Him when it isn’t from your heart.
