THE POWER OF SUGGESTION
The power of suggestion refers to the ability of ideas, even subtle ones, to influence an individual's thoughts, beliefs, behaviors, and even physical responses, often unconsciously.
This concept works like magic! This is why a cancer diagnosis often affects patients more than the disease itself. The mere knowledge of the illness brings a kind of dread, which, in turn, pushes patients toward deterioration faster than the disease would on its own.
Similarly, if someone believes they will fail at something, they are more likely to act in ways that confirm that belief. And it's crazy how small suggestions can have such a huge impact.
Like tricking yourself into believing a reality you’d prefer. My boss once drank cold water and insisted it tasted like Coke—because he had convinced his brain that it was.
The hints and suggestions we throw around often shape our reality and what we get to experience.
I remember struggling with insecurities about my stomach. I felt it was too big for a girl. But why? Did I wake up one morning and decide that? Nah, I was told so. And just like that, I wouldn’t wear a dress without worrying about how my stomach looked. It wasn’t until recently that I realized my stomach wasn’t even that big, it was healthy! I laughed pretty hard thinking back on all the stress I put myself through just because someone suggested I had a big stomach.
The funny thing is that once a suggestion is registered in your brain, it becomes a program that runs on its own.
Research has shown that deliberate suggestion can influence how people perform on learning and memory tasks, and so much more.
Dearest reader, the power of suggestion carries immense weight. What are you actively suggesting? There’s a need to be conscious and intentional about this.
