ARE YOU WISE IN HEART OR A BABBLING FOOL?

"The wise in heart [are willing to learn, so they] will accept and obey commands (instruction), but the babbling fool [who is arrogant and thinks himself wise] will come to ruin." — Proverbs 10:8 AMP

Emphasis on "thinks himself wise"

One of the most fascinating things about the book of Proverbs is how blunt and quick it is to call out folly. That’s why, during a fun game session in my daily Proverbs group on Sunday, when a question was asked about whether a given Scripture was from the book of Proverbs or not, everyone agreed that if it contained the word fool, it had to be from Proverbs (lol).

The above scripture speaks of two kinds of people:

1. The wise in heart

2. The babbling fool

While the wise in heart are willing to learn and therefore accept and obey commands (yiqqach), the babbling fool is arrogant and thinks himself wise.

One key detail to note is that the wise person is described as wise in heart. When wisdom comes from the heart, it becomes a lifestyle, a way of living. Such a person doesn’t think himself wise; instead, he lives and breathes wisdom through yiqqach.

The Hebrew word translated as "will accept and obey" in this verse is the verb yiqqach, meaning to take or to receive. This emphasizes actively accepting or embracing commands. While it does imply obedience, the focus is more on the willingness to receive instruction.

Dearest reader, are you wise in heart, or do you merely think you are wise?

P.S.: My daily Proverbs group is still open to new members!
