THE GREATER GOOD IN TEAMWORK

As the saying goes, teamwork makes the dream work.

Some time ago, I was told a story about how two teams competed to win a prize. Team 1 consisted of five girls, and Team 2 was made up of five boys. The game was designed in such a way that whoever won, their entire team would win and there could only be one winner. It was a "survival of the fittest" kind of game.

Team 1, having a better understanding and rapport with each other, decided to sacrifice their individual chances to make one of their teammates the winner. This way, the whole team would enjoy the privilege. On the other hand, in Team 2, everyone wanted to be the winner.

Predictably, Team 1 won. Four of their members dropped out of the game at different points to boost the remaining teammate's score. Meanwhile, Team 2 was busy competing against both Team 1 and themselves.

Why do you think Team 2 was fighting amongst themselves?

It’s simple, everyone wants to be in the spotlight. We love being the center of attention, and being the winner often comes with some form of prestige. In my opinion, this is why Team 2 failed.

When you work with a group of people, the vision ought to be the ultimate goal, not personal interests. For a team to work effectively, its members must reach a point where it’s not about what they want (individual needs) but about what the vision demands.

Dearest reader, can two walk together unless they agree? We must learn to work with others by embodying the vision that drives desired results. I’m pretty sure the members of Team 1 also loved the spotlight but chose to give it up for the greater good. In the end, they all benefited.
