THE YAM OR THE FOWL?

We were listening to the news this evening, and there was a particularly catchy story reported about how a police officer shot a student of Ozoro University for setting off fireworks (knockouts).

I felt it was so wrong, and though Mr. Okwanyionu agreed, he also explained that it wasn’t entirely wrong. According to him, “A crime takes two.”

In an attempt to justify the police officer’s actions, he mentioned an adage. In his words: “If you want to blame the bush fowl for eating the yam, you should also blame the yam for coming out.”

His explanation of this adage was astonishing. He said yams are supposed to grow inwards, and when they shoot out, it’s an error, giving their predators an unfair advantage.

Shooting fireworks is apparently against some rule in Nigeria (which I find weird), and while I believe the police officer had absolutely no right to shoot a citizen, I do see my father’s point.

There’s a way things and systems are designed, and working outside of this design makes one susceptible to certain unfair and harsh reactions.

Well, thinking hard about this scenario made me see how both sides of a story can seem right. Dearest reader, what do you think? Is the yam at fault for growing wrongly, or is the fowl at fault for taking advantage?

BTW, Merry Sunday!
