JUST DO IT!

Guyyyyyysss, guess what?

I posted my first poetry video on social media today!

I love poems just as much as I love novels. And though I often write some, I never think they're any good.

However, a few days back, my favorite poet, Huwa, made a post. It was her first spoken word video. Mehn, it wasn’t perfect, but she encouraged us to start posting, assuring us we’d get better over time. I remembered watching a much better version of that particular video a few years ago, and compared to how perfectly crafted her videos are now, it inspired me. I wanted to do it too, make a video and post it on social media even if it's not half good.

For someone shy about social media, it was incredibly hard. I didn’t want to think about it too much because I knew I’d find a dozen reasons not to. So, I picked the last piece I had written and started memorizing it.

My phone wasn’t good enough, and it never seemed like the perfect time, but I kept practicing. Then, on Christmas Day, my sister was around, and she had all the resources I needed to make it happen: a sharp camera, a willing videographer (lol), and someone ready to help me prepare for the shoot.

Everything seemed set, but then came the stumbling block, my dad’s visitors were in the exact place we had planned to use for the shoot. We decided to move outside, but their voices were still loud enough to be heard in the video. I wanted to give up and postpone it for another time. But knowing my sister, she might’ve traveled before the next day. So, I quickly grabbed the opportunity and made the most of it.

I dressed up, rehearsed my lines, sat in front of the camera, and tried my best not to die of panic. What this experience taught me was to seize opportunities! The next morning, my sister was gone, but I was so grateful I had done it regardless of the distracting background noise.

Sometimes, you just have to do it. Don’t overthink, because the right circumstances won’t always be there.

So, dearest reader, the next time an opportunity arises, let go of your inhibitions and take the leap. Jump on it! We’ll learn and get better along the way.
