Is It Bad To Hate?
Who else has been told or believes that it's not nice to say you hate a person?
I know that whenever I mentioned hating someone when I was younger, any older person around would shun me. Some would even exclaim, "God forbid! We don't hate people." This never made sense to me because, even after all the scolding, I still felt the same way about the person.
This mindset made me grow up scolding myself whenever I felt hate towards someone, because my upbringing instilled in me the belief that God forbids hate. But is that really true?
Lately, I’ve come to realize that I can hate someone, and to hate isn’t some kind of taboo or unforgivable sin. What would you say if I told you that God Himself is capable of hate? We all know God is love, right? The same God who I was told forbids hate said in Genesis (provide the exact verse): "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated."
To the Hebrew man, hate is not a bad word. The Hebrew word for hate is sane, and it means to reject, avoid, or ignore. Therefore, it’s okay to hate someone—it simply means I reject, avoid, or ignore the person. I’m sure you can relate to the feeling of being unable to stand someone you dislike, how easily you ignore and avoid them.
Dearest reader, the point is, there are a lot of superstitions we live with, but we must begin to question them to avoid making invalid claims. God hates by rejecting, avoiding, and ignoring. So yes, I’m capable of hate!
