WHY MASHAL?(1)
I started a daily Proverbs group a few weeks back, and it's been challenging! The whole idea was to get people to consistently read the book of Proverbs every day, and so far, it’s been a success.
But why Proverbs? There are so many books in the Bible—why did I pick Proverbs? And what’s so unique about this book?
In the Hebrew Bible, the Book of Proverbs is called Mishlei Shlomo, meaning “The Proverbs of Solomon.” Though the book contains poems and short statements that offer guidance on how to live a wise, moral, and righteous life, what is its root?
The root word for "proverb" comes from the Latin word proverbium. Proverbium combines the prefix pro- and the word verbum, which together mean “a word that you put forward” or “a common saying.”
What makes the Book of Proverbs stand out to me from all the other books in the Bible is how it directly relates to our everyday experiences and life. In my daily Proverbs group, we are constantly amazed at how relatable, sharp, and real the book of Proverbs is.
As most of my group members say, it’s become a daily reminder of our foolishness. Believe it or not, an awareness of our own folly leads us on the quest for wisdom.
I haven’t read any other book of the Bible as much as I’ve read Proverbs, yet each time I return to it, I’m lost in its depth of insight as it constantly unveils one’s mistakes. Ultimately, it provides a guide to living a good life.
Dearest reader, do you want to live the good life? Discover the practical wisdom for daily life. My daily Proverbs group could offer you an opportunity to explore these wise sayings for yourself—it’s just a DM away.
By the way, Merry Tuesday! ♥️
