WHAT IS REAL?

According to Wendy Doniger, "to say that the universe is an illusion (māyā) is not to say that it is unreal; it is to say, instead, that it is not what it seems to be, that it is something constantly being made."

Everything you can see, touch, and feel is an illusion—a projection of a well-crafted reality. As real as all things may seem, they are not exactly as they are presented. This is why we are advised to look beyond the mere physical appearance of things.

My coach would always emphasize that everything is an illusion because there is more to things than what meets the eye. If all you ever see is what meets the eye, then you're truly blind.

It is one thing to see, and another to perceive beyond how things are presented. The one who truly sees is the one who looks past the façade, searching for and uncovering the mountain beneath the iceberg.

When I came across the idea of māyā, I had just finished watching the movie The Matrix, so it made perfect sense. Hindus believe that māyā can exert a powerful influence on people, as it is considered the force that creates the cosmic illusion of the phenomenal world. However, māyā is not just "illusion"—it is "appearance."

The concept suggests that we are all under this sort of māyā, which blinds us to the deeper truths beyond our current realities. Māyā makes things appear so real that it leaves little room to question or investigate them.

Dearest reader, do you believe the universe is an illusion (māyā) in its appearance? Are all the things you see subject to your optical eyes alone?

We must learn to actively question everything around us and see beyond the façade the world puts on.

Selah!
