THE UNIVERSE HUMBLES.

“God resists the proud” (James 4:6). Apparently, the Bible wasn’t joking.

Have you ever felt the sting of being humbled after thinking, “That could never be me”? Life has a way of teaching us lessons when we least expect it, and often in the most surprising ways. Trust me, I’m speaking from experience.

Earlier today, I was talking with my best friend, Lee, about how pride can make fools of us. We concluded that when we start overrating ourselves, that same pride can come back to haunt us.

We’ve all heard stories and thought, “It could never be me.” Yet, life often has other plans. In those moments, we realize that yes, it can be us, and it can be humbling beyond measure.

I believe that when we confidently say we’d never do certain things, especially without firsthand experience, we’re daring the universe to prove us wrong. And often, it does. Only when we find ourselves in those situations do we start to understand why others did what they did.

I remember a friend back in secondary school who had strong opinions about relationships. Prayer, as I’ll call her, was a fierce critic, especially about anything romantic. She’d take our light-hearted chats about cute boys and turn them into lectures on morality. For her, crushing on someone was practically a sin. But years later, after she’d judged friends in relationships, she found herself in one, with the kind of person she’d once mocked. When I asked her about it, she just shrugged and said, “Life humbles.”

So, maybe we should learn a few things from these experiences: never say never, don’t judge what we haven’t lived, and stay humble. Because when life decides to humble you, it’s rarely funny.
