AREN'T WE ALL SELF-CENTERED?
I believe that humans are naturally inclined to be selfish and self-centered. We view the world from the perspective of the main character in our own story, often feeling as if everything revolves around us.
But it doesn’t. Still, this tendency is part of our nature. So whenever I hear statements accusing someone of being self-centered, I’m baffled. While we might understand that the world doesn’t revolve around us, it doesn’t mean we’re obligated to please others at the expense of ourselves.
We are deeply absorbed in our own thoughts and feelings. Even when we care about others, we are still our sole interest, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s okay to be self-centered; in fact, we all are. The real question is, to what extent are we self-centered?
What does it mean to be self-centered? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes it as being self-obsessed. So, where’s the harm in indulging in oneself?
When I was first accused of being self-centered, it was upsetting. But over time, I recognized that I was indeed focused on myself (though not to a fault). It no longer felt like an insult.
Dearest reader, do you truly believe there’s someone out there who isn’t self-centered? Someone so selfless that they don’t care about themselves at all?
In my opinion, we’re all full of ourselves, though I could be wrong. What do you think?
