SURREAL
.
I lost a relative today, and it feels so unreal.
I came home from church full of excitement, only to be met with the devastating news of my cousin's death. When I was younger, before she left Nigeria, she doted on me endlessly. People often mistook her for my mother because of how inseparable we were. She was more than just a cousin.
I’ve always hated hearing about death, but losing someone so special to me feels unbearable. At first, I couldn’t even cry—I was too shocked to move. It wasn’t until the reality began to sink in that the tears came, and I cried until I felt utterly drained.
My energy was sapped, not just from crying but from the weight of the memories and the pain of our closeness slipping away. As I recalled how we were, it felt as though my legs would give out, as if I might collapse under the grief.
Dearest reader, have you ever lost a loved one? How did it feel? What was your grieving process like?
