HOW STORIES INFLUENCES US.
Today, I went somewhere with my smallie. While we were waiting to be attended to, I was watching a movie, "The Everything Theory." She wasn't interested in it, so I changed it to "Best Friends in the World," which she totally loves and could relate to, so she wouldn't be bored while we waited.
Rewatching this movie made me realize how much movies can influence us. Storytelling is powerful.
The movie is set in a school. I watched it when I was in SS1 or SS2. The lead character, Olive Lane, is a very focused teenager who develops a crush on her male best friend. Viewers are totally smitten by how this character is portrayed. Personally, I love Olive.
I now realize that some decisions I made in secondary school might've been influenced by Olive Lane. From the decision not to date in secondary school to being a model student and keeping a squad of friends who I'd go above and beyond for at all times.
I had the mindset that a relationship plus schoolwork would never work because of how how it played out in this movie. No one had to preach it to me; just by seeing the struggles of Olive Lane, I abstained, and I never regretted it. Olive Lane is always going to be one of the reasons I'm scared of relationships, despite not having experienced a heartbreak (which happens to be the reason for most people's fear).
As teens, we are often eager to do the things we are told not to do, yet in a subtle way, this movie didn't just tell me, it showed me, and I obliged.
Dearest reader, have you seen the series "Best Friends in the World"? I'd recommend it to every senior secondary student. There's a bit of morals there to emulate. Do you find yourself influenced by movies or stories?
