I spent some time on YouTube today listening to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and each time I do, I'm in awe. Have you ever encountered someone who embodies your goals, dreams, and aspirations so well?
If not for network issues, I could literally listen to her talk all day. What I love about her is how real and humane she is. In one of her videos, which was more like a question-and-answer session, she said something that blew me away: "I still sit at my desk and I'm incredibly anxious that I will not be able to write a good sentence."
Any writer can relate to this. It's crazy, you know. I was so humbled to hear that a writer like Chimamanda experiences writer's block. She's world-class and all. In my head, I was like, "NO WAY! THIS IS CNA FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!"
The person interviewing her added, "You need that tension before the next thing springs up, right?" But Chimamanda responded, "That's what one tells oneself to feel better about it, but when you are there, sitting at that desk and the full page is blank, you're terrified and not thinking this is part of the creative process which would spring a wonderful story."
I can relate to this in those split seconds when my battery is low, the page is blank, time is almost midnight, and my brain is not cooperating. Of course, the content turns out okay-ish, but the panic before it is so terrifying.
Dearest reader, it's fair to say writing is tough even for the pros, but it is doable—it's not impossible. I love Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie truly, madly, and deeply. I never knew I could love someone I didn't know personally that much.
