ROOT PROBLEM.
---
In problem-solving, the first step is finding the root cause from which every other problem sprouts. Without getting to the root of the problem, it would be impossible to successfully solve the problem.
Using the analogy of a tree: if you decide to get rid of a tree and your strategy is to cut off the stem, shoot, and leaves, the tree will consistently grow back because it has not been truly dealt with.
I sat down with a friend today for hours as we took on a wicked problem to search for its roots, and after several hours, we found the root of the problem. The burden became lighter as we analyzed how the root led to many other encountered problems.
In every problem you face, ask yourself if it's the actual root or just a mere shoot. If we do not actively treat the roots, we'll end up running in circles trying to solve a never-ending ordeal.
Problems are like clusters; they start as a small mess that isn't a big deal and soon become too gigantic to ignore. Therefore, in solving them, we must start by taking the problem apart to search for the root. The root is most often that unique system that sponsors the problem.
If I have a problem with math, the root might date back to a long-standing hatred for math teachers. If I have issues airing my opinion, the root might date back to a childhood of constantly being shunned for speaking up. If I have problems dealing with others, it could date back to growing up in a dysfunctional family, and so on.
Dearest reader, look beyond the surface of the problem because trust me, there is more to things than what meets the eye. In deep roots lie the actual cause and solution we seek.
