---GUILDS

In the words of Huwa, "Why try being perfect, when perfection is you?"

Growing up, my first role model was my eldest sister, Kingatha. In my eyes, she was so perfect. I think I was around eight then. I remember the first time I visited her school; I was swayed by how loved and respected she was, so I promised myself that I was going to have that too (smiles).

Over the years, I've had several role models, ranging from Chimamanda to Huwa to Esther Paul. The list is endless. One thing I've come to notice is my desperation to imitate the outcomes of my role models rather than their designs.

For instance, if I admire Mrs. A and I'd love to be like her, the best approach is not to copy everything I see Mrs. A doing. That would only make me an inferior copy of her because I'd surely lack authenticity—the uniqueness in being me.

However, if I use another approach that involves understanding why she does the things she does, how she does them, the system supporting it, the principles she respects, and the shoulders she had to stand on, I'd be a step closer to being her in my own way.

Dearest reader, the point is, do not lose your individuality and authenticity in a quest to be someone else. The essence of having role models is finding guilds whose outcomes not only mirror what we want but whose principles align with ours.
