ALEF-BEIS
.
In my exploration of the Hebrew Alef-Beis, one letter that has particularly captivated me is Alef, which I associate with the phrase "As above, so below." However, today I want to delve into the fifth Hebrew letter, Hei.
Like all Hebrew letters, Hei carries a specific story, design, and meaning tied to its numeric value and symbolic representation. What particularly stands out for me about Hei is its connection to Teshuvah(Hebrew for repentance).
The numerical value of Hei is five. Interestingly, Hei symbolizes the garments of thought, speech, and action, which are divided into five elements:
1. Two levels of thought: imaginative and meditative
2. Two levels of speech: the words of the heart and the words of the lips
3. One level of action
Why does action only have one level? Because in action, you either do something or you don’t.
Teshuvah in Hebrew is not just ordinary repentance; it’s a profound process. Genuine contrition transforms the individual into a better person. In Hebrew, repentance involves more than mere regret; it requires effort and transformation. True teshuvah manifests in thoughts, speech, and actions.
Dearest reader, when thoughts and speech align, action becomes easier. We must design our intentions in our subconscious (thoughts), build consciously (through our speech—both heartfelt and verbal), and then proceed to act.
I hope this insight into the letter Hei and its connection to teshuvah resonates with you.
