TEMPTATION AND CHOICES.
Story, story!
Here's a popular tale we've all heard before: 'The Adam and Eve Story'. Today's service prompted me to question this well-known narrative.
According to the Bible, the Garden of Eden was filled with many trees, among which was the forbidden one. Adam and Eve could have all but one. But why is that? Why did God place that tree there when he had the power to make it not exist in the first place?
Have you ever felt a strong pull to do something you were specifically told not to do? Well, I have. And oftentimes, it really wouldn't have attracted me to do it if I hadn't been told not to do it.
Today, even after the service, I kept wondering why God kept the forbidden tree right in the garden, knowing fully well it would birth sin. As I thought hard and long, it just came like a lightbulb moment.
I realized that as humans, we were wired to be independent in the choices we make. God knows all and can do all things, yet he gave us the willpower to make decisions. One distinct difference between humans and every other living creature is the ability to reason and make choices independently.
So, while it was very possible for God to have saved humanity from such an epic fall by ensuring that that tree does not exist, he didn't because he already gave man the ability to make his own choice. Mind you, with great abilities comes great responsibilities. That's why when man made the wrong choice, the consequences came heavily.
Dearest reader, what lesson can you draw from this line of thought? For me, I learned that we face temptations because we have the ability to think and make choices. Don't be afraid of temptations; they will come, yet when they do, we must actively reason our way out and make the right decision.
